Black Travel Movement is heading to the Netherlands
Though the Netherlands is a small country, it is chock full of art and culture. By day we’ll walk alongside the famous canals and and uncover the “hidden history” of black people in Amsterdam. At night we’ll venture into the coffeeshops to explore the city’s ganja culture and stroll through the red light district. Then we’ll travel to Rotterdam for the largest Caribbean street party in the Netherlands. Join Black Travel Movement as we embark on a journey to explore the flavors of Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Day 1: Tues July 23rd– Arrival in Amsterdam and evening meet & greet
Day 2: Weds July 24th– Black Heritage Amsterdam Tour
Our morning tour begins at the Dam Square (city center). We will travel throughout the Amsterdam canals and UNESCO World Heritage Sites exploring the city’s “hidden history.” Our guides will reveal the presence of Blacks in Amsterdam from the 17th century visible on national landmarks, canal houses, art, and more. Some of the locations visited include: The West India House (HQ of the Dutch Trans-Atlantic Slave Traders), buildings with Moor heads, Mayor’s Residence (an UNESCO Heritage Site and the home of a former slave trader), a 17th Century sugar refinery, African burial grounds along with other historic tourist attractions (the Skinny Bridge, Hermitage Museum, ‘Silly Jack’ Clock Tower, and more).
We’ll end our tour at the Black Archives, an amazing new institution that has over 4000 books, objects, artifacts, and art documenting over 100 years of Black Dutch history of resistance and activism. You’ll have the option to continue to explore the city on their own and/or have dinner at a local Afro-Dutch restaurant (optional).
That evening we’ll take a private walking tour down the oldest street in Amsterdam which happens to have three of the best coffee shops (not the kind you drink) in the world. BTM will have access to a private room at a local Dutch bar where you can ask questions, learn the local ganja history, and try local food samples.
Afterwards, we’ll visit an actual underground coffee shop, see some of the marijuana up close and personal, and even have a chat with the owner and the growers in the shop. Then we’ll walk to the Amsterdam Museum for a brief exhibit then head over to the red-light district, Amsterdam’s most infamous neighborhood. Here you can sample Dutch beers and spend time in the local bars partaking in the full Amsterdam experience. Next, you’ll explore the rooms of the red light district, enjoy a show, and finish at the not often spoke about the blue light district.
Day 3: Thurs July 25th– Day of leisure in Amsterdam
After breakfast at the hotel you have the day to yourself to visit some of Amsterdam’s well-known sites like the Anne Frank House, Rijksmusem, the Van Gogh Museum, the Heineken Brewery, or do some shopping.
In the evening we’ll meet up at a local restaurant or lounge (at your own expense).
Day 4: Fri July 26th– Arrival in Rotterdam and Rotterdam Unlimited Street Festival
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll be transferred by private bus from Amsterdam to Rotterdam. After check-in you’ll be able to check out the Rotterdam Unlimited Street Festival happening just steps from our hotel.
Rotterdam has more than 174 different nationalities and cultures that all contribute to the city’s vibrant and exciting atmosphere. At Rotterdam Unlimited you’ll experience live music, dance, battles, parades, and more. You’ll hear live electronics, soca, hiphop, soul, R&B, drum-‘n bass and jungle and get to sample food from all over the world.
Day 5: Sat July 27th– Summer Carnaval – Rotterdam Unlimited
After breakfast at the hotel, we will attend Summer Carnaval, the largest Caribbean street party in the Netherlands. Rotterdam Unlimited is one of the biggest festivals in the hottest city of Europe, Rotterdam! The eclectic music scene, the famous creative arts community and 178 different cultures are the secret ingredients of Rotterdam’s incredibly vibrant and exciting atmosphere. More than 2.500 dancers, 25 carnaval groups and 30 floats can’t wait to mash up the streets of Rotterdam city! The Summer Carnaval street parade will unleash a huge wave of energy and that means an explosion of color, joy, music, and creativity in a parade of spectacular floats.

Day 6: Sun July 28th– Transfer to Amsterdam and final departure
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll take private transportation back to Amsterdam (city center and airport) for final departure.
